Hyderabad city is served by Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. It is situated in Shamshabad, at about 14 miles to the south of Hyderabad. The former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh-Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy named the airport after the former Prime Minster of India- Rajiv Gandhi. Commercial Operations of the airport were initiated on 23rd March 2008. In India, in terms of passenger traffic; it is the fifth busiest airport. Hyderabad Airport has an integrated terminal. Domestic and International flights arrive and depart from the same terminal. The airport also comprises of a special Haj Terminal. It basically handles a massive crowd during the Haj Season. Due to large number of Muslims in Hyderabad, the authorities planned to build this special terminal to maintain the rush during the season.
