The city of New Delhi is served by the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The airport is located in Palam at about 16 km from center of the city. The airport is named after the former Prime Minister of India- 'Indira Gandhi'. Since the year 2009, Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic, and it is the second busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic. Airport Authority of India administers the airport, but prior it was managed and operated by the Indian Air Force. Then in the year 2006, airport management was transferred to Delhi International Airport Limited, a corporation initiated by the GMR Group.
