It was named after the freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose in order to honor his contribution and struggle towards India's Independence. The airport is situated at about 16km from the city center. Kolkata International Airport was also formerly known as Dumdum Airport. The airport is well connected to most of the countries and to all the major cities of India. The airport comprises of two terminals which have ceased operations after the opening of new L shaped integrated terminal which consists six levels. The L shaped integrated terminal caters to domestic and international gates. And it also comprises of different levels for arrivals and departures. It has been proposed that the old domestic terminal would be used by regional airlines and the international terminal would be used for Hajj services.
